I am 51, and was diagnosed with Achalasia in September. One week ago I had the Heller Myotomy procedure. For the first time in at least 2 years I have not choked everytime I began to fall asleep! Without the procedure, my condition would only get worse. Now, I need to learn how to adjust for the future. Even walking or sittting in the wrong position causes heartburn. I was also told that I would gain weight now (just what I don't need!). I can live with the endoscopic screening for Cancer. What else should I be aware of after this procedure? I would love to hear from those of you that have been down the path that I am just beginning to take.

Did you have the partial wrap of your stomach during this surgery? That helps to control the acid reflux. Many doctors perform that now during this type of surgery. Otherwise have you tried prilosec or one of the other heartburn medicines?

I was diagnosed with Achalasia in August 2005 and and my surgery was in Sept 2005. You asked about life after the surgery. I have had great results. At first I was extremely tired from the surgery and I followed the post-surgery diet exactly. Now I can eat almost anything except popcorn, some fruit, orange juice and absolutely no alcohol. My esophagus is so stretched out-it never will be better and sometimes the "no Peristalsis" interferes with my eating. I do get some spasms in my esophagus but nothing I can't handle with a little Rolaids. I am also on Nexium. The weight gain was very slow--I had lost 50 pounds. I have probably gained 9 pounds back. I get hungary rapidly, have to eat slow and small amounts. They tell me my stomach is smaller now due to the "wrap around"--also I had a perforation and they used a little patch to repair. All in all, I feel great! When I look back at how long I suffered before my surgery, I can't believe it! I was really sicker than I realized back then. Would love to hear from others. Good luck to everyone with this disease and don"t give up!!! Charlotte

I had the heller myotomy in 2003 and have felt wonderful since that day. No problems or symptoms until last week when I started having trouble swallowing again. I am hoping it is related to something that I did while working out last week. Over exertion or something but I am not holding my breath that it will go back to the way it was before.

I have not had any refux and do not have the partial wrap. I don't get spasms in my chest but it has been sore since that day last week. Was not told anything about Cancer screenings when I had my operation.

Guess it is about time to go in for a check-up.
